Academic research & training
Before retirement, I was an academic at the University of Melbourne (where I remain an honorary Professor), Florida State University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. You can see glimpses of that academic career at keolab.com and my Google Scholar profile for a full list of scientific papers.

Experimental design & data analysis
Together with my colleague Gerry Quinn, I’m the author of a well-known text from Cambridge University Press. Our website for that book is qkstats.com.
In addition to teaching biological statistics at universities across Australia and internationally, I have provided statistical advice on design and analysis to a wide range of government and private organisations, with particular strength in the design of experiments.

Independent Expert Advice
I have extensive experience conducting external reviews, ranging from desktop reviews of large projects to in-person reviews involving extensive interviews. Reviews can cover individual projects, larger programs (e.g. marine park monitoring), or entire organisations (e.g. university departments or degree programs), and can range from data-intensive examination to strategic overviews.
I am familiar with a wide range of organisational and leadership structures and scientific funding systems within government.

Marine ecology
Experienced marine ecologist with direct field experience in southeastern Australia and North America, and a wide range of invertebrate groups, algae, and seagrass.
Particular areas of strength include:
- Resilience of coastal ecosystems to disturbance, both natural and human-induced
- Dispersal and larval biology of invertebrates and fish
- Impacts of invasive species, including direct and indirect pathways
- Ecology of hard-surface invertebrates (bryozoans, sponges, ascidians and related groups)
